Ask a performance cruising sailor what they really want from a boat and you tend to hear the same thing: sail well, sail far, and enjoy the journey. The Arcona 415 is built around exactly that. She is the latest evolution of the much loved Arcona 410, refined rather than reinvented, and she carries forward the Swedish yard’s reputation for going to windward better than almost anything on the water.
Arconas have long been known for their upwind ability, and the 415 is no exception. A fine entry and a sharp bow, with a subtle concave section, let her slice to windward rather than push through it. The hull is relatively narrow on the waterline with a long, fair run aft, and a single deep rudder gives plenty of grip and control with very little drag. The result is a boat that points high and sails fast upwind, and stays quick once you crack off the wind too.
For most owners that translates into the thing that matters most: she covers ground. You either sail further in the time you have, or finish your passage sooner and with more in reserve.
The 415 is designed to be sailed by a couple as easily as a full crew. Twin carbon wheels let you sit outboard to windward with a clear view of the sails, and every sheet and control line is led back to hand in the cockpit. A full width traveller, a German mainsheet system and the option of powered halyard and mainsheet winches mean you can trim properly without leaving the helm. When you reach harbour, the same cockpit opens up into a genuinely sociable space for everyone on board.
Underneath the finish, the 415 is seriously well engineered. The hull is vacuum infused with a foam core for stiffness and light weight, with solid laminate where the loads are highest, around the keel and the fittings. A galvanised steel frame is bonded in to carry the keel, mast and rig loads, and the bulkheads and furniture are laminated into the hull so the whole structure works together. A stiffer hull does not just last well, it sails better, holding its shape and driving the rig efficiently. She is rated CE Category A for ocean sailing, so she is built for far more than a sheltered weekend.
She is first and foremost a performance cruiser rather than an out and out racer, but she has the legs to do well on the start line if the mood takes you. Three keel options let you tune her to your sailing: a 2.00 metre shallow draft for thinner water, the standard 2.20 metre fin, or a 2.50 metre deep keel for owners chasing every last degree upwind. With a generous sail plan and a cast iron keel with a lead bulb set low down, she carries her power with composure.
Step below and you are met with proper Scandinavian joinery, available in classic mahogany or a lighter oak. The saloon is built around a large table with C shaped seating, and there is a full size, forward facing chart table, a real pleasure to find and increasingly rare. The galley is practical and generous, with a deep double sink, a large fridge and plenty of stowage, and headroom is excellent throughout. Big hull windows fill the interior with light. Layouts run from two to three cabins, with the option of a second heads, while clever touches such as an open transom that folds into a bathing platform, deep full height aft lockers and a cavernous bow sail locker keep all your kit close to hand.
The 415 comes with a dependable Yanmar diesel saildrive as standard, with a more powerful diesel available, giving you proven, fuss free power for manoeuvring and for pushing home against wind or tide. Arcona continues to develop its propulsion options, so do ask us about the latest choices if alternative power is on your wish list.
The Arcona 415 is a boat for people who actually go sailing, and who want to do it quickly, comfortably and in real style. If you would like to see how she would suit your kind of sailing, get in touch on info@seyachts.com to arrange a viewing or a test sail.
